Editor of Bicycling mag is a dubious bona fides. I've known two who were better writers than Flax and also only marginally aware as cyclists-- as and Flax and Evandeepol. The publishers only want Eds who raise subscriptions and doing that through fear mongering is perfectly legit to them.
Also we must see that his status as former Ed and "spokesperson" for the ignorant bikers of America positions him for government payouts, now or in his next gig, either as Consultant or Flackmeister for the Infra Industry. It's always about the money
Wow. I just ride a damn bike. It's transportation and exercise, a personal choice, not a political statement. I am and have always been pretty pragmatic about not getting killed, so it's difficult for me to imagine this guy's mindset. I haven't participated in anything close to bike activism culture for a decade. The vibe was "silly but mostly harmless" when I last checked. I never dreamed there could be so much cringey California beef about it on X-Twitter. Thanks for documenting this little corner of the breakdown of civil sanity, I guess.
As a middle aged white female "vehicular cyclist" or simply a lady on a bike who likes to be able to bike anywhere without getting doored and side passed, you brought back memories of trying to exchange, conversate with someone who has decided that "these=bad", very much in a cultish mindset, where only his bubble has the right of way...
This is a was of a lot of good thing for all of us who love to ride and those who have tried and gave up or those who are thinking of trying and do not know where to start etc, just as I was some 13 years ago, when my knees were shaking trying to ride a quiet street behind my house.
Fast forward about a year and I realized I was a two-wheeler on the roadway which prompted me to remember my younger years as a motorcycle passenger, paired with expert advice and strategy from some great "vehicular cyclists" aka men and women who just want to bike in the simplest way and safest way possible (Serge and the likes of CyclingSavvy et al) and I started being confident enough to take the roads and not limit myself to infra that was supposed to be for me and keep me out of sight, out of mind...
Why is this such an impossible dream (or nightmare?) for some Clustered Bs?
We all want people to enjoy riding. We need to be able to correspond and exchange ideas and concepts with each other!
So, I have a type, I’m a “vehicular cyclist”. This guy is ballistic, claims that following the same rules of the road as all road users is an “elitist” expectation. I’d argue it’s far more elitist to expect every other road user or municipality to adapt to your personal need for special treatment. I despise people like this because they inhibit the ability to foster good relations with motorists because of their excessive pettiness. Sharrows are great, bike lanes are dangerous and a waste of valuable road space.

Flax is definitely a Hall of lamer ;)
